THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A man who was caught with 24kg of ganja was sentenced to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment by a local trial court here on Monday.

also imposed a penalty of Rs 1 lakh on the culprit. Failure to pay the penalty will result in the extension of the sentence to one more year.

Chandrabose was arrested by excise officials on June 20, 2012, shortly after he alighted at Thiruvananthapuram central railway station at Thampanoor with 24kg of ganja, which he procured from Vijayawada in Andhra Pradesh. Excise enforcement anti-narcotic cell made the arrest based on a tip-off received. Chandrabose was carrying six packets of ganja, each weighing 4kg. The packets were kept in a trolley bag and a duffle bag he was carrying.

After arrest, Chandrabose secured bail and got out of prison the same year. But, he soon went absconding. He was caught again eight years later (2020). Following this, his trial commenced before additional sessions court VI.

The team that made the arrest was led by excise enforcement and anti-narcotic special squad assistant commissioner B Suresh Kumar and excise circle inspectors V
