Malayalam filmmaker K R Mohanan dies

died at a private hospital here on Sunday. Mohanan, 69 was on treatment for stomach related ailments at the hospital for a week.

A graduate from FTII, Pune,

Mohanan

walked by the stream of parallel cinema coming up with documentaries and movies that won critical acclaim. His debut feature 'Aswathama' based on Madambu Kunjikuttan's novel revolves around the life of a man who is disillusioned with customs and descends into depravity. His film 'Swaroopam' which had Sreenivasan in the lead won national award for best Malayalam film in 1992.

Bina Paul, vice-chairperson, Chalachithra academy recollected K R Mohanan as a quiet person driven by clarity of thought in film-making. "He was very clear about his notion of movies. We had learnt so much from his guidance in the conduct of film festivals which have always helped me with regard to organising film festivals," said Bina Paul.

Chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan said that K R Mohanan's contributions in popularizing International film festival of Kerala was exemplary and that he was uncompromising in his inclination for films of artistic value.

Minister for culture A K Balan said that his demise was an irreparable loss to Kerala's film and cultural scene.

His body was kept at Kalabhavan theatre for public to pay homage and was taken to his house at Mudavanmugal. His final rites will be held in

Thrissur

on Monday.
