THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Admitting that the BJP cannot be defeated at the centre single-handedly, senior
Congress leader and former
defence minister A K Antony
has called for a broader coalition of secular political parties 'to put an end to the rule of
communal forces
'.
"It's high time various political parties, which uphold secular values, realised the need for a broader unity to counter the BJP," Antony said while inaugurating the year-long birth centenary celebrations of
K Karunakaran's birthday
here on Wednesday. Recalling the example set by Karunakaran in 1969 by facilitating the formation of
C Achutha Menon
's government to end the second EMS ministry despite a low representation of the Congress in the assembly, Antony said a similar formula was required to oust the BJP from power at the Centre.
"Nothing is impossible in politics, as Karunakaran had proved. The secular parties should learn lessons from him, a visionary and a man of determination. If he was alive today, he wouldn't have allowed communal forces to gain strength in Kerala," he said.
