Kilimanoor block panchayat gets two in one crematorium
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:
The crematorium which runs both on electricity and gas became functional on Saturday. It was a combined effort of seven gram panchayats under the Kilimanoor block which eventually led to realisation of a project for which the villagers were desperate for decades.
The new facility has been opened at Kanaara in Pazhayakunnumel
"It had long been a cause of concern for us. The crematorium was the need of so many villages and now it has become true,'' said Sreeja Shaijudev, president, Kilimanoor block panchayat.
The local body authorities had faced public resistance in executing the scheme. Eventually, a group of protesters were taken to Santhikavadom run by city corporation to allay the concerns. "We showed them how a crematorium functioned in the middle of the city without causing any problem for neighbouring residents. We could convince them and get on with the project," said Shaijudev.
