Thiruvananthapuram: A trust constituted in the memory of late CPI leader

was inaugurated by governor P Sathasivam on Wednesday.

The Trust will function for environmental cause and human rights. Surendranath, who was fondly called Asan, had formed the Thiruvananthapuram Students’ Organization and played a crucial role in movements to protect nature.

“People like Surendranath convinced our society that an individual could be a Communist and a Gandhian at the same time,” said Sathasivam in his speech. “It is not surprising that he could connect the different political philosophies to humanism and human rights,” the governor added.

Poet and activist B Sugathakumari suggested the representatives of the Trust begin their activity by planting 101 fruit tree saplings, as a tribute to the contribution of the late parliamentarian in the Silent Valley struggle.

“He spoke about the need to conserve the environment at a time when no one realized the importance of nature,” said MP Benoy Viswam.

CPI leader Kanam Rajendran, who is also the chief patron of the Trust, remembered Surendranath as a leader who led the path of the new generation of communists.

“The Trust will felicitate the first rank holder in the department of philosophy, Kerala University and will institute an endowment for the best student in the SSLC examination from Chalai government school,” said K P Jayachandran, secretary of the Trust.

Chairman of the Trust G R Anil and working president S S Jeevan also attended the function. tnn
