THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Veteran filmmaker K P Kumaran has been chosen for the J C Daniel Award 2021 in recognition of his lifetime contributions to Malayalam cinema. Cultural minister V N Vasavan announced the award - the highest recognition in the field of cinema, instituted by Kerala government. The award carried Rs five lakh, citation, and a statuette. Kumaran was selected for the award by a jury led by playback singer P Jayachandran. Director Siby Malayil and chairman of the Kerala state Chalachitra Academy Renjith, cultural department principal secretary Rani George were members in the jury.

"Kumaran presented a new language and new sensibility to Malayalam parallel cinema in his illustrious career spanning 50 years," the jury observed.

His uncompromising approach to cinema as a medium was explicit throughout his works, from the internationally acclaimed film 'Rock' (1972) and 'Atidhi' (1975) to 'Gramavrikshatile Kuyil' on the life of Kumaranasan (2020), made at the age of 83.

Kumaran began his film career as the co-script writer of the award-winning film 'Swayamvaram' directed by Adoor Gopalakrishnan. The film 'Rugmini', based on a story by Madhavikkutty won him a state award. The one-and-a-half-minute short film 'Rock' won him an international award in 1972 Asia film festival. The award would be presented at the state film award presentation ceremony at Nisagandhi Auditorium on August 3.
