IMA calls for phased ban on firecrackers
Thiruvananthapuram: The state chapter of Indian Medical Association (IMA) has demanded a complete or phased ban on the use of firecrackers during festivals, religious events, political functions and other celebrations in the wake of the firecracker accident in Thrissur that claimed at least 14 lives and left several others seriously injured. In a statement, IMA said the incident was not an isolated one but part of a recurring and serious public health concern across the country. It pointed out that similar tragedies occurred recently, including a firecracker unit explosion in Andhra Pradesh in 2026 killing 21 people and another incident in Tamil Nadu where 25 people lost their lives.IMA also recalled the 2016 Puttingal temple tragedy in state, in which more than 100 people were killed and over 350 injured.According to IMA, accidents related to the manufacture and use of firecrackers occur frequently in India, despite safety regulations. The primary issue, it noted, is the lack of strict enforcement of these rules. Unregulated use of firecrackers, particularly during festivals and public events, poses a serious threat to human life and public safety. The statement highlighted that many countries globally permit fireworks only under controlled conditions. In Europe and the United States, public displays are conducted under strict safety protocols and supervised by licensed professionals, while illegal storage, manufacturing and uncontrolled public usage are strictly prohibited. In contrast, repeated safety violations at firecracker manufacturing units and festival venues in India continue to result in loss of lives.IMA demanded the implementation of stringent national standards for firecracker manufacturing and storage facilities, besides greater transparency and stricter monitoring of the licensing system, promotion of eco-friendly and safer alternatives such as laser fireworks, cultural, music and dance performances, and strengthening public awareness campaigns to highlight the risks associated with firecracker use.IMA emphasised that firecracker accidents are not mere mishaps but preventable disasters, and called for a shift towards safer modes of celebration that prioritise human life.
