‘Husband harassed Yazna for more dowry’

T'puram: The crime branch team, probing the death of Yazna Ibrahim, 30, recorded the statements of her family members on Monday. According to the statement, 130 sovereigns of gold, 22 cent land and Rs 10 lakh in cash were given as dowry at the time of marriage. However, her husband Shamnad, 36, a native of Kavaliyoor, mentally and physically harassed her demanding more dowry, they alleged.Yazna, of Dar-ul-Zalam at Odayam in Varkala, was found hanging at her house in Sharjah in March 2024. Her family, who spotted injuries on her body, had filed a case with Ayiroor police suspecting she died of dowry harassment. The investigation into the case was handed over to the crime branch a few days ago. Shamnad has not visited India after her death.The crime branch has issued a lookout notice to bring Shamnad to Kerala. Authorities have also alerted Interpol to extradite the accused.Ibrahim, the father of the deceased, told the probe team that during an argument, Shamnad hit her on her face and she had lost a tooth. The incident, which took place in 2018, was over registering her property in his name. In 2019, Yazna filed a divorce petition, but the accused and his family held a compromise talk with her and her family, and the case was withdrawn."After this incident, Shamnad behaved well with her for a year. However, later he started to torture her again. He used to pressurize her for more dowry. Shamnad asked her to stay with him in Sharjah some six months before her death. After reaching Sharjah, Shamnad, who owned a car, demanded her to sell the gold ornaments she was wearing to find money to buy a luxury car. He had already sold all the gold given as dowry, and she urged him not to sell more gold. This annoyed him, and there were quarrels between them over it," said Yazna's sister Yazmin.The couple have a five-year-old son.
