High-level meet to discuss free bus travel scheme for women in Kerala
T'puram: The govt has convened a high-level meeting of transport officials on Wednesday to discuss the implementation of the free travel scheme for women announced in KSRTC buses. The UDF govt, which has decided to implement its first guarantee within a month, has so far announced only the launch timeline for the scheme. Key aspects, including the categories of buses to be covered, distance limits and eligibility criteria, are yet to be finalised. Questions remain over whether the benefit will be available for interdistrict travel and whether women of all age groups will be eligible. The transport minister has called a meeting of senior officials to finalise the framework. The govt is considering extending free travel in ordinary, limited-stop and fast passenger buses operated by KSRTC. If implemented in these categories, the govt may have to provide nearly Rs 60 crore every month as subsidy to KSRTC. Officials estimate that nearly 12 lakh women passengers use KSRTC services daily. The proposal is reportedly being examined based on models adopted by neighbouring states. In Karnataka, where a similar scheme is in force, free travel is not available in AC and sleeper buses, while in Tamil Nadu the benefit is limited to ordinary bus services. The announcement has generated enthusiasm among women passengers but it has also drawn criticism from the opposition. The CPM questioned how the govt would fund the additional burden, pointing out that the state is already providing substantial monthly financial support to KSRTC, including assistance for salary payments.Private bus operators have also continued their opposition to the proposal, expressing concern that women passengers may shift entirely to KSRTC services, affecting the viability of private buses. The new transport minister is expected to hold discussions with private bus owners in the coming days to address their concerns.
