THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: When Class XI students in other schools are busy preparing for the board exams and planning their future, at Trivandrum International School (TRINS), the students have gone an extra mile to teach spoken English to the lesser privileged.
Once a week, the students in group of 8 to 9 visit Korani government school, Patathil government school and Manalakam government school and teach the students from class I to VI, spoken English.
"First they teach them alphabets and then they teach them how to speak correct sentences in English", said principal, Rupa Sen.
This initiative is part of the regular school curriculum and aimed at creating accountable and caring individuals. On every Wednesday four periods are allotted for the same. After the classes they are asked to reflect on what they have learnt and also prepare a lesson plan for the next week.
Also to break the ice and ensure good bonding, the children gift chocolates, erasers and pencils to the children in government schools. Last year, students of TRINS conducted an economic survey to know the annual income of families of these children. "The annual income of some families were so less that the students were shocked to realize families are living on so little money," said Sudheer Ibrahim, co-ordinator, school's social service project," said the school's social service project co-ordinator, Sudheer Ibrahim.
"We have noticed that this has helped to bring in humility and a sense of responsibility in our students. We are preparing them for life and shape them as value oriented human beings", added Sen.
