Health university mandates trained security personnel on campuses
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala University of Health Sciences (KUHS) has directed all medical colleges and hospitals under it to ensure that trained security personnel or agencies are posted on the campus, OP wings, and casualty for the security of healthcare professionals and institutions. The vice-chancellor said recognition will not be given to institutions that defy this.
KUHS VC Dr K Mohanan said after the murder of Dr Vandana Das at Kottarakara taluk hospital the university governing body had included this criterion in the 'minimum standard requirement' (MSR) for the affiliation of professional institutions under the university.
"Now we are reiterating this demand in the wake of incidents that occurred at RG Kar medical college in Kolkata," said Mohanan.
KUHS had approached the HC soon after Dr Vandana's murder, seeking adequate law to ensure the protection of healthcare professionals and institutions. Besides this, KUHS also made it mandatory that trained security personnel should be deployed on the campus, OP wings and in the casualty department. It had also insisted that CCTV cameras be installed in the emergency department and hospital campus. KUHS also had a discussion with the police department and suggested constituting a hospital protection force similar to CISF. The university has suggested that govt hospitals can employ this security force and their salaries can be sourced from the hospital development societies.
For private hospitals, they can hire the service of the hospital protection force by paying the govt, similar to the govt employing CSIF at different govt institutions for its security.

Ideally a Chief security officer should belegally mandated who runs the security department. But all organisations to cut corners have outsourced security to the vendors or combined security functions with other departments like idustrial safety, Health safety and environment, HR, Admin etc etc. Physical security is a specialised function similar to army para military or police and shold not be outsourced.Read allPost comment
