Glass bridge at Akkulam likely to open in two weeks
T'puram: After a series of delays, the much-awaited opening of the glass bridge at Akkulam Tourist Village is expected within the next two weeks. Initially planned to coincide with Onam celebrations, the launch was postponed due to the Wayanad landslides. However, tourism department sources now indicate that a high-level committee will be formed to oversee the bridge's inauguration, ensuring that all safety measures are in place. The glass bridge, which underwent a final inspection by experts from National Institute of Technology (NIT)-Kozhikode and a team from Chennai, had encountered a setback earlier this year. Cracks were discovered in a three-layer, 12mm glass panel in May, prompting the removal of the damaged portion.Although the overall structure remained secure, govt decided to replace the entire glass surface to ensure maximum safety. "The tourism department has decided to form a high-level committee to ensure that the glass bridge is ready for visitors. An inspection will also be held before the opening, which is expected within a couple of weeks," said a source close to the tourism department. In addition to safety enhancements, the bridge will feature LED walls designed to simulate the illusion of breaking glass, adding a thrilling element to the visitors' experience. The tourism department aims to provide a safe yet exciting adventure tourism attraction. The glass bridge at Akkulam, like similar structures in Vagamon and Wayanad, features a 52m walkway — the longest of its kind in the region. These bridges offer unique experiences, including artificial fog, mist and the LED glass-breaking illusion. Unlike other glass bridges, the Akkulam bridge will be open for night visits, with the structure illuminated for an enhanced sightseeing experience.Visitors will also be able to enjoy views of the nearby lake and the Air Force Museum. The Vattiyoorkavu Youth Brigade Entrepreneur Cooperative Society is the implementing agency for the project. The tourism department is expected to announce the entrance fees soon, as the final preparations are being made for the bridge's opening. The cracks, which developed in early May, led to the removal of the damaged panel. The tourism department had alleged that it may be the handiwork of some antisocials after throwing stones on the glass panel. Sreekaryam police had also ordered a probe. However, preliminary investigations concluded that no people were involved in the glass panel damage. However, to ensure maximum safety, govt has opted for a complete replacement of the glass footbridge and will conduct an inspection again.
