Gangster Shamnad arrested from UP-Nepal border

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Police arrested notorious gangster Shamnad, an accused in 22 criminal cases including violations under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) and attempted murder. Facilitated by Thrissur Police, in coordination with state anti-terrorism squad (ATS), the arrest took place at the Uttar Pradesh-Nepal border.Shamnad had been hiding in northern India and Nepal, and was apprehended in connection with a case registered at Vadakkekad police station in Thrissur city.Shamnad is the main accused in a 2016 incident where he impersonated vigilance officers to steal gold ornaments and other valuables from a residence in Perumbavoor. ATS investigated the case and subsequently filed a chargesheet. After being released on bail, Shamnad went into hiding and became involved in the case registered at Vadakkekad police station .Shamnad had close ties with a terrorist organization, and also with Thadiyantavida Naseer, said officials. Investigations are ongoing to identify individuals who may have assisted Shamnad during his time in hiding. The arrest was made after ATS received confidential information.
