Dredging work to be over in 3 months

T'puram: The dredging work to deepen the Muthalapozhi estuary is set to be completed within three months, officials announced during a district sitting of the minority commission. Authorities invited tenders for the project and work will commence as soon as the contract is finalised. The commission registered a suo moto case in response to a series of accidents at the Muthalapozhi fishing harbour. Officials informed the commission that necessary steps were taken to improve infrastructure, including the completion of toilet block construction in Thazham Palli and Perumathura.
Additionally, two barges brought in by Adani Ports, which remained in a hazardous state within the channel, were removed to facilitate smooth dredging operations. Authorities also confirmed that the southern breakwater, which was previously dismantled, was restored to its original state. This improved water flow from the backwaters to the sea, reducing sediment accumulation. After reviewing reports on the situation, the commission directed officials to present an updated status report in the next sitting.
During the sitting, the commission addressed complaints from the Karamana Muslim Jama-at regarding the demolition of the Pappanamcode mosque and its adjoining cemetery for the Karamana-Kaliyikkavila road expansion in 2015. Jama-at representatives claimed they did not receive the promised structural compensation. In the previous session, the commission instructed the opposing party to meet with the complainants and resolve the issue. The district collector later informed the commission that discussions took place and that the govt approved a structural compensation amount of Rs 4,19,284 for the Jama-at. With this decision, the matter is now closed.
