Dowry death: Yazna’s phone details reveal she faced harassment

Thiruvananthapuram: The crime branch team, probing the death of Varkala native Yazna, 30, in Sharjah allegedly due to dowry harassment, collected several WhatsApp chats and videos substantiating the allegations that she faced severe physical and mental harassment from her husband and his family.In the WhatsApp chats, Yazna even complained that she even faced sexual advances from a 14-year-old boy in her husband's family. Her husband, Shamnad, 36, of Kavalayoor, and his family however, mocked and harassed her when she complained about it. It was alleged that neither her husband nor the family members were willing to warn the boy against it. They allegedly created situations allowing the boy to repeat the offence. The family even used these incidents as a tool to harass her further.The probe team has retrieved several videos and audio clips, crucial evidence of the harassment she faced at her husband's home, from Yazna's mobile phone. The mobile phones of Yazna's sister and father were also collected by the probe team as Yazna used to complain to them about the harassment.Her body was found hanging at her house in Sharjah, where she was living with her husband and their five-year-old son in March 2024. In the postmortem report, several injuries were found on her body.According to her family, Yazna had filed a case against Shamnad and his family in 2020. However, the issue was later ‘resolved' through talks.As per her family, 130 sovereigns of gold, 22 cents of land and Rs 10 lakh cash were given as dowry during the marriage.
