THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Breaking from the practice of organising lectures and medical camps to create awareness on diabetes, the city will host a fashion show focused on diabetes on Saturday. The fashion show to be held Uday Samudra,

Kovalam

at 8 pm is part of the seventh Annual Global Diabetes Convention.

Organised by Jothydev’s Professional Education Forum (JPEF), the fashion show aims to create a mindset that diabetes is not a disease and those having diabetes can lead a perfectly normal life by proper management of lifestyle and food habits.

Dancer and author Jazz Sethi, who is the daughter of Billiard legend

Geet Sethi

, will lead the models to walk the ramp. A Type1 diabetes patient, Jazz will also perform a dance in the event.

"One need to talk about diabetes to clear these misconceptions. I dance and play sport when I like and I am enjoying my life. I know how to take care of myself, as I have my pumping machine,

insulin

and other medicines with me," said Jazz, who founded Diabesties1, a movement to create awareness about diabetes.

Mentioning an incident during the her connecting flight to the state on Friday Jazz said, “My co-passenger had some issue and I asked him if he has a machine to test sugar. Then airlines crew asked me if I am a doctor and I said no, I am a diabetes patient and have a machine to test sugar. With their help, we tested the sugar level of the passenger and it was low. He was given some juice and he became stable. People need to speak in such situation than hush it up,” said Jazz.

Former Miss Kerala Indu Thampy will join the ramp along with Jazz. “Everyone has their why me moment, but I took it in positive sense. People still ask me, if I had lots of chocolates in childhood that I got Type1 diabetes. I patiently listen to their worries and explain to them about it. I hope to create an impact for other people with diabetes through this event,” said Indu.

"The aim is to eliminate the misconception that diabetes is ugly and promote it as fashionable statement with healthy lifestyle. The average age when people are diagnosed with Type1 diabetes is three years or twelve years, but parent don’t speak about it. The more the parent open up and discuss, the more the child will lead a healthy life," said Dr

Jothydev Kesavadev

, the founder Chairman and Managing Director of Jothydev’s Diabetes Research centre.

"The idea of fashion show was conceived on the fact that people are still confused about Type1 and Type2 diabetes. After the ramp walk, the participants will be speaking about their journey and how they manage diabetes, said Geethu Sanal, dietician.
