Depositors allege police inaction on complaints
T'puram: An action council alleged on Tuesday that Museum police are hesitant to register cases on the complaints of the depositors, who were allegedly cheated out of money by the administrative panel members of Thiruvithamcore Cooperative Society. The council members will stage a protest in front of the police station next week, demanding that cases be registered on the complaints. It was alleged that the complaints were given at the beginning of this month. The society had branches at Manacaud, Sasthamangalam, and Kannammoola. On the complaints of depositors at Manacaud and Kannammoola, cases were registered by Fort and Medical College police. The depositors of the Sasthamangalam branch approached Museum police, but no action has been taken yet."Five persons filed complaints at the station, but the SHO was reluctant to register cases. The complainants were told that the accused would settle their issues by providing back the deposited money with interest soon. The cops were working on behalf of the accused, and the repeated requests to register cases were ignored. This is injustice, and we will stage a protest in front of the station next week if cases are not registered," said Dinachandran B, a member of the action council.Meanwhile, more cases are being registered by Fort and Medical College police. As per the figures till Tuesday evening, a total of 138 cases have been registered. Fort police registered 120 cases, and 18 cases were registered by the Medical College police.Hundreds of depositors were allegedly cheated by the administrative panel members of the society, as the society denied interest on deposits and also the deposited amounts. Most of the depositors are retired govt employees and have deposited their gratuity and provident fund at the society. Depositors were offered 14-18% interest per lakh rupees. However, many among them stopped receiving interest in 2023, raising suspicion of some misappropriation among the depositors. When a few among them tried to withdraw the deposits, they were denied money, and the irregularity came to light.
