CPM urges SFI to disband University College unit panel

T'puram: The CPM Thiruvananthapuram district committee advised the SFI state committee to disband the SFI unit in University College. This unit has been in the headlines for the wrong reasons, the latest being the attack on a disabled SFI worker on Dec 2, a day ahead of World Disability Day.
The frequent incidents of violence in the college have been causing headaches for the CPM and the govt. It is for the SFI state committee to act based on the recommendation of the party.
Following complaints that a disabled student, Muhammed Anas, was locked up in the SFI unit office on the campus and physically assaulted, four SFI workers were suspended from the college. The college disciplinary committee recommended the suspension of the students. The higher education minister, R Bindu, also announced a probe by collegiate education director P Sudheer into the incident.
Muhammed Anas, 19, a second-year BA Islamic History student, was subjected to harassment and body shaming in front of students before being assaulted. The accused directed him to climb a wall to erect party flags, but he claimed helplessness due to his disability. This annoyed them, leading to the assault. The accused are Chand, Midhun, Alan Jamal and Vidhu Udaya.
Muhammed Fayaz Khan, 24, a friend of Anas, was also assaulted for being with Anas after the incident. The accused in this case are absconding and search for them is on, police said. The victims told police that they were subjected to physical and mental harassment by the SFI unit workers as they refused to take orders from the unit functionaries.
The CPM recommendation to dissolve the SFI unit committee ahead of the party district conference is seen as an attempt to live up to CPM state secretary MV Govindan's slogan that CPM will not entertain any wrongdoings and will not work against the wishes of the public.
