The deceased is suspected to be the college chairman E Muhammed Thaha, 62. His spectacles, a single shoe and mobile phone were spotted near the body and his car was parked inside the college compound. The body was burnt 95% making it difficult to identify, police said.

Police sent samples for a DNA test to confirm the identity of the deceased. From circumstantial evidence, probe team is certain that the charred body is Thaha's. In the CCTV visuals, he was seen reaching the college in his car on Monday night. On Sunday, he bought 30 litres of petrol from a nearby pump.

A team of forensic experts conducted an inspection, and traces of petrol were found at the crime spot.

Police said financial issues could be the reason for the suicide, as the college was running at a loss for the last couple of years.

"Salary has not been paid to the staff for four months and he was struggling to move ahead due to financial issues. Once we get the FSL report, we can confirm the identity and later we will take measures to check the involvement of any external forces. As per preliminary findings, there was no involvement of any external force and it could most probably be a suicide," police said.

According to police, the body was spotted in the middle of electronic waste, used tyres and other waste materials, which were dumped on the ground floor of the under-construction administrative block. The security guard saw fumes when he reported for duty in the morning. Soon, the other staff and police were alerted. Thaha was in the college on Monday with other staff to clear the procedures to renew the AICTE approval. On Tuesday, the college opened for the examination of first-year BTech students.

Nedumangad police registered a case under BNS Section 194 for unnatural death.
