At 96, Kerala woman tops literacy mission exam

A native of Cheppad in Alappuzha, she was the oldest candidate to clear the examination conducted by
Aksharalaksham is a project launched by Kerala State Literacy Mission Authority to achieve hundred per cent literacy in the state.
Karthiyani Amma will receive the certificate from chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan at an event to be held at CM's conference hall at 12 noon on Thursday.
The successful candidate of basic literacy examination, can enrol for Class IV equivalent classes and continue their education till higher secondary education.
A total of 43330 people had appeared for the basic literacy examination and 42933 people passed the examination. Any person above the age of 15 years can enrol in Aksharalaksham project to continue their education.
"As per UNESCO guidelines, our state has achieved hundred per cent literacy. But 2011 census identified 18 lakh illiterates in the state. The Aksharalaksham project aims to educate these people to achieve the hundred per cent literacy target," said the statement from Literacy Mission Authority.

I never understand the meaning of literacy If u talk her she can only understand malayalam even I have seen graduates from kerala who can't read or write in either hindi or English still they r literates for me it's strange that u cannot communicate the people from other states,,,Read allPost comment
