THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Estranged Kerala Congress (M) vice-chairman P C George on Friday urged Congress stalwart A K Antony to intervene immediately to 'save' UDF. He said that UDF has lost its mass base in a big way. According to him only Antony can now repair the tattered image of the front.
But George's leader and finance minister K M Mani was quick to point out that there was no crisis in UDF to necessitate Antony's intervention.
"Antony's help will be definitely sought. But at present there is no crisis in the front," clarified Mani.
George, who was ousted as government chief whip by Mani, said industries minister P K Kunhalikutty, leader of Muslim League, the second largest constituent of UDF, has seen the writing on the wall and realized that the front's electoral prospects have deteriorated.
George said recent controversies have damaged UDF and in this condition the front cannot fight an election. He mocked senior Congress leaders for insisting that UDF has not suffered any image loss. "But it is people who will decide whether UDF has lost its credibility or not," said George.
He said he would continue the fight against corruption and no one could stop him from doing that. He also threatened to reveal more about the corrupt deeds of Mani and his son Jose K Mani, Kottayam MP.
Mani however said he was not ready to comment on the allegations levelled against him by George since his culture did not allow him to stoop to such low level of politics.
"George has become the opposition leader of Kerala Congress. The party has the courage to take necessary disciplinary action against him when it is needed," said Mani.
