IDUKKI: An autorickshaw carrying four sanitation workers overturned near Munnar in Idukki district on Wednesday morning, when an elephant accidentally collided with it while fleeing from another tusker. The workers were on their way to the waste dumping yard in Kallar at the time of the incident.
All four of them were injured, with one woman sustaining a fractured leg and the others suffering minor injuries. Forest officials confirmed that the elephants involved have since been driven back into the forest.
According to forest officials, the waste dumping yard lacks proper fencing, which often attracts wild animals searching for food. "Two elephants had been present in the area since Tuesday, and we had communicated this information. During a fight, one elephant fled and inadvertently overturned the autorickshaw," a forest official said.
Officials also noted that the local panchayat had been repeatedly advised to erect a fence around the waste dumping yard, but no action has been taken to address the safety concern.
