Winter greens, fruits continue to linger around in city markets
From juicy red carrots to green peas to freshly grown spinach and fenugreek and flat beans, Thane markets are flooded with some of the best winter vegetables and fruits that are yet to bid adieu with the onset of a warm spring.
Together with groundnuts and Totapuri mangoes, another favourite, residents are enjoying the best of the season till a whole new cycle begins. “Even as the weather has turned warm, there is still a bit of the winter vegetables available,” said Vilas Kamte, a retail seller.
“Prices have been reasonable, they are fresh, delicious and can be used in a number of ways,” said home maker Mitali Vora from Patlipada.
Many supermarkets are offering good deals, especially on fruit and veggies that will soon be scarce. Apart from the red juicy carrots and green peas, corn, broad beans, leafy greens and groundnuts are also fast sellers. “Ideally, one should eat what is in season for the full benefit,” added nutritionist and mother of a five year-old Monica Salve. “As long as the supply is adequate, we can keep the rates low. For now we are encouraging customers to buy,” added another fruit seller Shekhar Dey.
