THANE: In a bid to contain the spread of coronavirus ahead of an impending third wave, the

Ulhasnagar Municipal Corporation

(UMC) has decided to take some stringent measures against violators. The civic body also stressed on encouraging Covid-appropriate behaviour in public.

From July 1 onwards, people found moving around without face masks or violating

Covid-19

rules will be subjected to RT-PCR tests on the spot by civic body workers.

Confirming the development, Yuvraj Bhadane, Public Relations Officer, UMC, said, "We have launched this drive in the city today. People without masks are being tested for coronavirus and are also being fined accordingly. Strict action will be taken against those found flouting the norms laid down by authorities."

Police personnel have also been deployed in several areas of the city to keep a check on violators.

currently falls under Level-3 of the Maharashtra government's Unlock plan, which mandates non-essential stores to down their shutters at 4 pm. Restaurants and eateries can allow dine-in services only till 4 pm at 50 per cent capacity, post which only delivery and takeaways have been permitted.

Ulhasnagar on Wednesday reported 10 new Covid-19 cases, with which, the total tally climbed to 20,784. The city has so far recorded 20,194 recoveries and 506 deaths.

At present, there are 84 active cases in the UMC limits.
