Traffic cops plan eight lanes for autos below SATIS deck
The civic authorities have been successful in making Station Area Traffic Improvement Scheme (SATIS) work well to ease the traffic woes of Thaneites. But the auto rickshaw problem from the station continues to be the same. To get a solution for the same, the Thane traffic police have now turned their eyes on city autos, especially those standing below the SATIS deck.
1x1 polls

Most Thaneites face the problem of auto drivers refusing to ply short distances. The traffic cops have now planned to make eight auto rickshaw lanes. Autos in these lanes will not refuse any passengers even for plying a short distance. The rule will come into the force sometime next week.
Sudhir Dabhade, deputy commissioner of police (DCP), traffic informed Thane Plus that his department conducted a survey at the station, where the auto rickshaws line up under the SATIS deck. "We found that many auto drivers refuse to ply short distances and the passengers are simply turned away. Auto rickshaw drivers look for long distance fares. We want to stop this practise."
Dabhade further added that the traffic police have planned an eight-lane path for these auto rickshaws. "The lanes will be separated with stones, so that a strict line will be maintained for auto rickshaws. Autos will have no choice, but to follow the lanes once they enter the queue. Once they enter the lane, it will be a compulsion on them to carry passenger without any reason or argument. We will also deploy our staff to supervise these lanes so that there will be a strict action against those who will misbehave with the passengers."
"Each lane is around 60 meters in length and there will be eight such lanes. The auto union has also joined hand with us and they do not have any objection on this pattern. We will start these lanes within a few days and we hope that the passenger will receive a good service from the auto rickshaws once this rule is followed," Dabhade concluded.
Thane railway station currently witnesses lakhs of commuters on a daily basis, with more than 150 trains halting at Thane. The station gets crowded with these passengers and there is a great need of auto rickshaws for the passengers to go ahead. As there is no fixed line, no strict action is taken against people violating the line. Furthermore, the auto drivers don't follow what passengers have to say, but instead go to destinations where they want to go. The traffic cops now want to have a strict action against these autos who violate the rules and hence this initiation of concrete plan of building up auto lanes.
