Thane cops set up crypto investigation cell

THANE: In response to the alarming rise in cybercrimes across the city, the Thane Police Commissionerate has taken a proactive step by setting up a specialised Cryptocurrency Investigation Cell at the Cyber Police Station, Thane.

Until now, every police station under the Commissionerate had already established cybercrime units, each with two cyber experts tasked with probing cases of online fraud, identity theft, phishing, and other digital offences. However, during the course of these investigations, it was frequently observed that cybercriminals were increasingly turning to cryptocurrency as a medium to siphon off money. The anonymous and decentralised nature of digital currencies made it extremely challenging for authorities to trace transactions and recover stolen funds, often leaving victims helpless.

Recognising this gap and the need for focused expertise, Thane Police Commissioner Ashutosh Dumbre formally inaugurated the first-of-its-kind Cryptocurrency Investigation Cell in the city. The new unit consists of officers and officials possessing advanced knowledge of cryptocurrency, blockchain networks, and digital wallets. These experts were drawn from both the Economic Offenses Wing (EOW) and the Cyber Police Department, ensuring a collaborative and resourceful approach to handling complex cases.

Importantly, the officers from this specialised cell will not only spearhead cryptocurrency-related investigations but will also provide training sessions and technical guidance to investigating officers across all police stations in Thane.

“This initiative will give our force the technical edge to stay ahead of criminals who misuse cryptocurrency. Our aim is to strengthen investigation, ensure speedy justice, and build confidence among citizens,” said Commissioner Dumbre.

• Nearly 50 cases have been detected where proceeds of cybercrime were swiftly converted into cryptocurrency.
• Major offences include online investment frauds, fake trading platforms, and romance scams.
