The tragic incident that took place on Tuesday was captured on CCTV cameras of Chirag Mansion on Dargah Road. However, it is still unclear how the dog landed on the road – if it jumped or was thrown, said Mumbra police. The canine, which suffered a couple of fractures, has been sent to a rescue in Karnala.

Though the mother refused to file a complaint and said she did not suspect any foul play in her daughter Sana Khan’s death, Mumbra police senior inspector Anil Shinde said they are verifying if the dog’s owner, who allegedly keeps several canines on the building terrace, had the necessary pet licence from the civic body.

Sana was the only daughter of a caterer who had struggled for eight years to conceive her, said relatives. Sana’s maternal uncle Asif Rangrez said on Tuesday, around 4.30pm, the mother-daughter stepped out of Chirag Mansion A-Wing to exchange a packet of diapers at a nearby shop when the dog fell on his niece from the B-Wing terrace, fatally injuring her.

Sana was first rushed to a private hospital and later transferred to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital for a CT scan. However, upon arrival, the on-duty doctors performed an ECG and pronounced her dead.

Police conducted a thorough panchnama of the scene and arranged for the post-mortem examination of the body at the govt hospital. Her final rites will be performed on wednesday.

Rangrez alleged that the dog’s owner has taken over the entire terrace and keeps dogs of different breeds, possibly without proper permissions. “The incident occurred just because of the dog owner’s negligence. Police should take suitable action,” he alleged.

Kshama Shirodkar, a veterinarian from Thane Municipal Corporation, said, they will investigate the allegations and if found true, suitable action will be taken. “We will also verify if there is any animal cruelty by the pet owner,” Shirodkar added.
