THANE: Vishnu Nagar police on Saturday arrested six persons in connection with a robbery at a finance company in Nashik on October 1, 2013.
Nearly 14kg of gold worth Rs 3.80 crore and Rs 26 lakh cash were from the arrested. The 2013 Bollywood movie 'Special 26' had inspired the main accused, two brothers - Chandrashekhar Rane (29), and Rajdutt Rane (33) - to commit the robbery.
'Special 26' is based on a real-life incident involving a group of conmen who had pulled off many heists in the 80s and robbed businessmen and politicians by pretending to be CBI or Income Tax officers.
Thane police commissioner KP Raghuvanshi said that the Vishnu Nagar police were investigating a house-breaking theft case, in which two suspects - Dipak Dalvi, a KDMC security guard, and Jivan Singh - were picked up.
"During interrogation, the duo spilled the beans that the stolen booty was with Chandrashekhar and Rajdutt, both former residents of Dombivli, who had shifted to Nashik a couple of years ago. They also named two others involved in the case," said Raghuvanshi.
A police team from Vishnu Nagar then reached the house of the accused in Nashik and Rane brothers and started frisking their house. To their surprise, the police team unearthed a huge stock of molten gold and Rs 26 lakh cash. "Both of them are into small-time business of computer repairing and electric supply materials," said Raghuvanshi.
Chandrashekhar told the police that taking a cue from the movie, he roped in the other accused and committed the robbery at the Bhavani Peth branch of Mannapuram finance company in Nashik. Chandrashekhar got a police uniform stitched from a local tailor.
Sources said that Chandrashekhar was asked to repair the computer of the finance company's manager through which he got many details about the company.
On October 1, posing as cops, he, along with the others, executed the plan and fled with the gold and cash.
