Police crack 11 chain snatching cases
THANE: The Thane police have arrested two persons from Uttar Pradesh who frequently traveled to Thane and Mumbai to snatch chains and then returned to their native place. The police have detected a total of 11 such cases.
The accused, Ashish Singh (23) and Amit Singh (26), both from Agra, have been arrested, while one accomplice remains at large.
A police officer stated that a chain snatching incident was reported on June 30, where a chain was stnached by the bike-bore duo, prompting the police team to scan CCTV footage in and around the area. The footage revealed the involvement of the duo, and the police tracked and arrested them based on technical evidences, said Amar Singh Jadhav, the deputy commissioner of police (zone-5)
The accused have confessed to committing chain snatchings under various police stations, including Kasarwadavali, Kapurbawdi, Khadakpada, Naupada, and Goregaon.
The police claimed to have recovered only 100 grams of gold, averaging around 10 grams per case, although the actual amount of stolen gold is significantly higher. The police did not provide information regarding any receivers who might have assisted the accused in disposing of the stolen gold.
Additionally, the police have recovered two motorcycles used in the crimes.
