Nine Thane medical students suspended for ragging junior

THANE: Nine senior medical students of the Thane municipal corporation run-Rajiv Gandhi Medical College (RGMC) in Kalwa have been expelled from the hostel and suspended for an entire academic year after a probe confirmed their role in ragging a fresher in the college hostel last month, civic commissioner Abhijit Bangar said late on Wednesday. Bangar said the stern action will prove to be a deterrent for other students.

Dr Rakesh Barot, Dean RGMC, said that the action follows an email sent to the University Grants Commission, Delhi early last month mentioning the alleged ragging in the college hostel located at Manpada, Ghodbunder Road. The Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS), and National Medical Council later contacted the RGMC dean and sought a probe following which a team comprising members from the anti-ragging committee conducted an investigation that confirmed the incident.

The college was in the news in 2013 also after a first-year medicine student accused six of his seniors of ragging.
