A man and his wife were living separately in Thane due to marital discord, with the husband frequently harassing her and questioning her character, according to a statement from the Chitalsar police station based on the 30-year-old victim's complaint.

The couple had filed for divorce, which was pending in court.

The husband had previously demanded that his wife return to live with him, threatening severe consequences if she refused, officials stated.

On Tuesday morning, the accused intercepted his wife near the Borivali tunnel construction site while she was heading to work.

He assaulted her with an iron rod, poured a flammable substance on her body, and set her alight, as per the official report.
