Maharashtrians shower son-in-laws with gifts during Adhik Maas

Thane: For Maharashtrian families in the lake city, the period of Adhik Maas which falls once every three years is a time to shower their sons-in-law with gifts, love and loads of blessings.

From performing a puja to praying for his well-being, offering sweets and gifting precious items, Thaneites seem to be holding on to this age old tradition.

A resident of Waghbil, Sangita Sukhi, said, “We consider this period as auspicious. We donate and offer gifts to family members and loved ones. The last time, I had gifted my son-in-law a silver diya.”

Also known as Purushottam, the extra month that is added to the Hindu calendar is a period of religious significance for Hindus. “This year, Adhik Maas began on May 16 and will end on June 13,” said a city-based astronomer. —Avani Ghangurde
