KALYAN: Suspecting he was a thief, a group of six persons lynched a 48-year-old homeless man in
Kalyan after tying his limbs.
Following the incident, the Mahatma Phule police went through CCTV footage of the area and arrested five of the accused. A hunt has been launched to track down the sixth accused who is on the run.
The victim, identified as Jongal Lohra, was a resident of Jharkhand.
Police said he used to live on the roadside. On Tuesday morning, his body was found near Mahalaxmi Hotel, situated near Kalyan railway station.
Police found the hands and legs of the deceased had been tied up and he had multiple injuries on his body. Police scanned CCTV footage of the area and found six people assaulting Lohra. While five of the suspects are employed as security guards, the sixth is a porter, said the police.
Anil Powar, assistant commissioner of police, Kalyan region, said, "On the basis of CCTV footage, our team nabbed five of the accused on the same day, while one is still on run."
The arrested accused have been identified as Sandesh Jadhav, Navnath Rathod, Mangesh Hamal, Anish Shaikh and Noor Alarm. The absconding accused is Popat Mama.
During probe police found out that in the wee hours of Tuesday a woman selling vegetables on the roadside spotted the victim and raised an alarm, perhaps on the suspicion that he was a thief. The accused, who were at the spot, caught hold of Lohra.
The victim took a stick and tried to attack them. The six accused then caught hold of him and bound his hands and legs and started raining blows on him, resulting in his death. The accused left his body at the spot and fled.
