KALYAN: Suryakant Desai, former Shiv Sena MLA from Parel-Lalbaug, died when he was being shifted from a hospital to another in an ambulance in Dombivli on Friday. His family said the ambulance broke down midway and that delayed his treatment.
The family said Desai (83) was undergoing treatment in Karwa hospital and was having trouble breathing since Thursday, for which he was referred to Mamta hospital as he needed a ventilator. A technical problem in the ambulance occurred, and Desai died before he could be admitted to Mamta.
Desai and his family had been living in Bhagshala Maidan in Dombivli for 22 years.
The family said it had arranged a private ambulance. Around 11am, at some distance from Karwa hospital, it stopped. Members of Desai’s family then pushed it up to Mamta hospital. Desai’s son Rishikesh said he would file a police complaint against the ambulance owner.
