KALYAN: Two days after banning movement of all non-emergency, non-essential private vehicles in Dombivli, the Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation on Friday evening locked down Kalyan too.
The decision to seal off Kalyan, both east and west, was taken by the municipal commissioner, Vijay Suryawanshi, after two more positive cases of coronavirus infection were detected in the twin city of Kalyan-Dombivli, taking the total to 21.
The two new patients were a 28-year-old man from Dombivli (East) and a 66-year-old man from Chikanghar in Kalyan (West).
According to officials, the Dombivli youth, who hails from Aayre village, had got infected after coming into contact with Dombivli’s first coronavirus patient, who had returned from Peru and instead of staying in home quarantine, travelled to work in local train for six days before he was tested positive. The Kalyan patient, said officials, was a “victim of community spread” as he did not have any international travel history. He had recently visited his hometown in Jalgaon and returned home on March 6.
On Wednesday, Dombivli, both east and west, was blocked from all sides and policemen were deployed at access points after a rise in new cases. Only vehicles used for emergency and essential services were let in or out. Cops were seen stopping and warning those on the road against stepping out of the area.
The KDMC has appealed to residents in the sealed areas to order grocery and vegetables online on the mobile app it has launched. Civic officials said its volunteers will deliver the ordered items at their doorstep.
