THANE: A 31-year-old man arrested for illegal transportation of beef in Maharashtra's Thane district, an official said on Tuesday.
The authorities intercepted a vehicle at Davalpada in Ambernath following suspicious activity on Sunday, according to an official from Hill Line police station in Ulhasnagar division.
The authorities confiscated 700 kg of beef and bovine body parts, estimated at Rs 70,000, the official confirmed.
While the driver was taken into custody and the vehicle was seized, three other passengers managed to escape, the official stated.
The accused faces charges under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, and the Maharashtra Animal Preservation Act, as per the official's statement.
Investigators are working to determine the source of the beef.
Under the Maharashtra Animal Preservation (Amendment) Act, 1995, the slaughter of cattle remains prohibited.
