Surat youth’s heart transplanted into Noida man 1,158km away
SURAT: An 18-year-old
A green corridor was formed to facilitate transport of Mihir’s heart for transplant into Mehra’s body, whose valve of the heart had to be changed in 2012. He required a new heart because its pumping capacity had reduced to just 15%, sources said. This was 19th donation of heart to a recipient from Surat in past 30 months.
Mihir’s kidneys, liver and eyes were also donated by Bharat Patel (42), a businessman and father; Kokila Patel (42), housewife and mother; and Kajal Patel (20), student and sister.
A truck had hit Mihir’s motorcycle on Hajira Road on September 10 on Hajira road. He was rushed to Sunshine Global Hospitals. He had a clot in his brain and was declared brain-dead on September 12.
Doctors of Institute of Kidney Diseases and Research Centre harvested Mihir’s kidneys and liver. A doctor from AIIMS, New Delhi harvested the heart and transplanted it into Mehra within hours. Dr Praful Shiroya of Lokdrashti Eye Bank accepted the donation of eyes.
Mihir’s kidneys were transplanted into Sanjay M Kanani (34), a resident of Surat, and Adanan Ansari (12), a resident of Ahmedabad. His liver was transplanted into Manjula Harsoda (50), a resident of Ahmedabad.
