Accused Vaishali Desai had told the aspirants that she has good contacts and that she can get them government jobs for which a candidate has to first clear a competitive test. She took money for jobs like police sub-inspector, talati, junior clerk and police lok rakshak constable.

Based on a complaint lodged by Jigar Patel, a college student who recently completed BA, Desai and her associate Ashish Patel, both residents of Valsad, were booked in the Valsad city police station.

Desai is a distant relative of Jigar and they often met in family functions. Ashish is a neighbour of accused Desai and would often meet her outside the Valsad SP office to discuss issues.

Jigar was applying for various government jobs and appeared in competitive exams like junior clerk and talati on basis of Class XII results. In his complaint, Jigar alleged that Desai told him that she has contacts and can help him get the job for Rs 5 lakh.

Trusting her, Jigar told his parents that he wanted to start a business and demanded Rs 5 lakh. His father, Ramesh, a labour, withdrew his provident fund savings and gave Rs 5 lakh to Jigar. Later, Jigar gave the money to Desai in June 2022.

"In October, I changed my mind and asked Desai to return the money. I told her that I will clear the exam on my own. Since then, she continued to delay refunding my money," Jigar told TOI.

"We have served a notice to the accused and she has been asked to record her statement," said a police officer in Valsad city police station.

The police booked the accused under various sections of Indian Penal Code 406 (criminal breach of trust), 420 (cheating) and others.
