Surat's sari makers ready with Pulwama and Army designs

SURAT: Designer saris depicting public outrage over the Pulwama terror attack, Prime Minister Narendra Modi as well as Priyanka Gandhi's entry into politics are attracting traders from across the country to Surat, country's biggest synthetic sari-making centre.


If a designer sari maker in Pandesara has give vent to 'we want revenge' feeling of people post-Pulwama, many others have started selling saris with pictures of Modi and Priyanka.

Manish Agarwal, who makes designer saris in his unit in Pandesara GIDC, has made five sari designs based on Army theme including the surgical strike. Nearly 10,000 pieces of these designer Army-themed saris are being sent to different parts of the country like Delhi, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.

We artists express feelings of people through our designs. People are seething in anger after the Pulwama attack. The idea of expressing people’s sentiments on saris has been appreciated by the buyers and we have started getting more orders for the design,” said Agarwal, who plans to contribute a portion of profit for the welfare of martyred soldiers’ families. Many other sari makers are also considering to adopt Army-themed design for their products.


Naimish Jiyani, a textile manufacturer, has developed saris with images of Modi. Using some innovation, Jiyani also developed Modi saris with embroidery giving it an uncommon look. “The sari with embroidered Modi image is a unique product developed on branded garment. I am receiving many inquiries from various traders across India and hope to get good bulk orders as elections approach,” he said.


Many textile unit owners have developed a series of designs for digitally printed saris of these political leaders. These saris are printed on digital printers that give sharp images like posters.


“I have seen saris with images of some political leaders, so I decided to print saris with pictures of Priyanka Gandhi who has entered active politics now. Considering her popularity in different states, I expect good orders,” said Gaurav Shrimali, a textile trader. Shrimali is already working on orders from Priyanka supporters who are going to participate in her rally in Ahmedabad at the end of February.
