SURAT: The situation remained peaceful in the diamond city’s
Varachha
area since early hours on Wednesday after rioting incidents reported on late Tuesday night. Two buses were torched and government properties were damaged by some rioters after the protest by
Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti (PAAS) in Varachha at an event of
BJP Yuva Morcha
where
Rutvij Patel, state president of
BJYM
was present.
The situation was brought under control by police soon after the PAAS supporters and
Patidar
residents of the area have allegedly joined in the violence. Police have detained 38 persons from the spot of violence. Meanwhile the rioters targetted two BRTS buses and torched them. They forced the passengers to get down and later torched the buses. No casualties were reported in the violence.
Some groups have damaged a community hall in Sarthana too and damaged the furniture. After being detained a group of PAAS activists were brought to Umra police station at night. Soon a group of Patidars followed them to police station and forced police to release them. The PAAS members were released by police.
"The situation has been brought under control after some incidents of violence. We have installed bandobast in the areas to ensure peace. There is no tension in the city now,” said Satish Sharma, city police commissioner, Surat.
