SURAT: It's a double blow for synthetic textile industry in Surat. After the truck operators halting supply of sarees and fabrics in the city, the nation-wide stir by employees of oil PSUs is taking a heavy toll on the industry with stoppage of gas supply to textile processing and chemical industry on the second consecutive day on Thursday.Sources said officers of Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) stopped natural gas supplied from the country's largest field in Mumbai offshore, forcing the shutdown of the Hazira-Bijapur-Jagdishpur (HVJ) pipeline.
GAIL had to cut supplies on the HBJ pipeline to the Gujarat Gas company resulting in halting of the supply to the textile industry.
Textile processors said supply of natural gas by the Gujarat Gas Company Limited has been halted from Wednesday evening and it is continuing. The daily requirement of natural gas in the industry is at three million cubic meters. Pramod Chaudhary, president, South Gujarat Textile Processors' Association (SGTPA), told TOI, "The strike by truckers and the oil PSUs staff has paralysed the textile industry."According to Chaudhary, the industry has suffered losses to the tune of Rs 500 crore in the last three days. On Thursday, most textile processors downed their shutters with the stoppage of natural gas supplies. "The grey fabric manufactured by the weavers is supplied by the textile traders to the textile processors for dyeing and printing. If the strikes continue for long, then the industry is heading for heavy losses," said Ramesh Gajjar, former chairman, SGTPA.The Federation of Surat Textile Traders Association (Fostta) said supplies of sarees, fabrics and dress material in the domestic market have been hampered due to trukcers' strike, which is continuing for the last four days."The textile traders have suffered huge losses in the last four days. The Central Government should take pro-active measures to end the strike, otherwise the industry is going to suffer badly," said Devkishan Manghani, secretary, Fostta.
