Surat: A proposal has been submitted to the standing committee to set up a special committee for the proper management of nine municipal corporation-run Suman schools. It is expected to take a decision on the proposal, which intends to make the secondary schools for the socially deprived sections of the society, into model institutions, on Thursday.
The SMC's Nagar Prathmik Shikshan Samiti runs around 270 schools. Over 1.35 lakh students get primary education up to class VII in seven different languages in these schools. For secondary education of children belonging to socially deprived sections, initially four Suman schools were started in 1999-2000. At present, there are nine Suman schools. Seven are Gujarati and two Marathi medium. Two each are located at Pandesara, Limbayat and Varacha and one each at Adajan, Dindoli and Katargam. In all, 6,188 students study in these schools. The results of class X of Suman schools have been very good.
Standing committee chairman Mukesh Dalal said, "These schools have been producing over 90 per cent results in class X exams for the past few years. If we offer better facilities and ensure proper management, these schools can do wonders."
He said, "Two of these schools are managed under the PPP concept. We would not mind private partners for other schools too. The number of schools can be increased depending upon the requirement. We would like to provide good secondary education to all youngsters of the city."
