SURAT: The death of an 11-year-old child worker under mysterious circumstances here on Friday has once again brought the issue of child labour into light.
The postmortem report has not revealed the cause of death. The viscera samples of the deceased have been sent for examination.
Kanaiyalal Yadav, owner of Ramdev Tea Centre, near Mahalaxmi Market in Udhna, had brought the child Ajay in a critical condition to New Civil Hospital.
The child died during treatment. The body was handed over to Yadav without postmortem. Yadav was preparing to send the body to the boy's home town in Uttar Pradesh (UP) when the issue was reported to 1098 Childline by an unidentified caller.
Childline volunteers brought the death of the boy to police's notice. Police recovered the body and sent it for postmortem in the afternoon.
"Police were informed by the tea stall owner and other staff that Ajay was suffering from stomach pain. It seems that he died of some illness. The postmortem report has not revealed any injury on Ajay's body," police sub-inspector at Udhna police station R N Chaudhary said.
Childline officials said they rescued two child labourers -- Mangal Subhashram and Hariprasad Ramdular --from Ramdev Tea Centre under the supervision of District Child Protection Unit. "The rescued children informed Childline that their parents stayed in Uttar Pradesh and that they were brought to Surat by the tea stall owner. The stall owner offered them two-time food and Rs 1,500 per month salary. The children are from Pagvani village in Kherabal district of UP," Prasad Adhav of Childline said.
Childline officers found that deceased Ajay was also from UP. He was brought here to work by the tea stall owner, Childline officials claimed.
