Man dies by suicide after assault for filming beating

Surat: A 21-year-old man allegedly died by suicide after being assaulted for filming a video of another man being beaten in a residential society in the Chowk Bazar area. Police have booked four persons for abetment to suicide and arrested three of them.The deceased, Vraj Gedia, ran an electrical shop with his father, Vinod Gedia. According to police, the incident occurred on Valentine's Day at Serenity Homes society, where Gedia had gone for electrical work.At the society, a group of men were allegedly beating a man, suspecting he knew the whereabouts of a couple who had eloped on Valentine's Day. The accused — Jayanti Gondaliya (41), Dilip Pipaliya (39), Dilip Gondaliya (41) and Bhavesh Ghoghari — suspected that the man, a friend of the couple, knew their location. Jayanti Gondaliya's daughter had eloped and the accused allegedly questioned the friend about the couple's whereabouts before assaulting him.While passing by, Gedia began recording the assault on his mobile phone. One of the accused allegedly noticed this, snatched his phone and threw it on the floor, damaging it. The group then allegedly assaulted Gedia as well.Police soon reached the spot and took those involved to the Chowk Bazar police station. However, both Gedia and the man who was initially beaten declined to file a complaint, after which they were allowed to leave.Later, Gedia allegedly went to the Tapi river bridge in the Dabholi area and jumped into the river.After his last rites, Gedia's family approached the police and filed a complaint of abetment to suicide.
