SURAT: Nearly 15 to 17 members of dreaded Mama gang struck a house in Kosad village on the outskirts of the city after Tuesday midnight and escaped after robbing jewellery worth Rs 1.23 lakh.
The villagers tried to nab them but they fled under the cover of darkness. The house also has a provision store attached to it.
The complaint has been registered by the victim
Narendra Patel, who runs a small kirana store near the railway track on Lallu Chuni tekra in the village.
He told police that the robbers entered the shop by lifting the shutters with axes and sticks just after midnight of Tuesday. They also stoned the house and left a villager Chhagan Patel injured when he tried to confront them.
Once inside, they robbed Rs 1,500 cash and valuables worth Rs 1.23 lakh but soon escaped into the open fields near the railway track after villagers started gathering.
BV Gohil, police inspector of Amroli, who is investigating the case, said, "The modus operandi confirms that it was 'mama gang' of tribals. They generally stone the place they strike and injure people. They strike in night and vanish in the darkness. We will catch these gang members soon."
Police said Kosad seldom witnessed such incidents before it was included within the Surat city limits and it was the first such loot since 2008.
However, after more than 15,000 slum dwellers were shifted to quarters meant for economically weaker sections here, number of historysheeters have made this a hunting ground.
