SURAT: Twelve more deaths due to leptospirosis were reported on Tuesday, the highest in a day this monsoon. Besides, 42 new patients were identified with leptospirosis on Tuesday in hospitals of south Gujarat.
The death toll has now reached 104 while there are 545 patients. Over the last two days, 21 deaths have been reported. Most of the deaths are have been reported from Surat district (42) followed by Tapi (31).
The names of those who died on Tuesday are: Kushal Gamit, 21, Vyara, Tapi, Bhikhu Halpati, 40, Bardoli, Surat, Suresh Patel, 50, Chikhli, Navsari, Usha Vasava, 24, Vyara, Tapi, Shakila Gamit, 37, Vyara, Tapi, Sevanti Gamit, 42, Olpad, Surat, Chiman Gamit, 47, Songadh, Tapi, Puniya Vali, 35, Valsad, Mayank Gamit, 60, Songadh, Tapi, Ramti Konkna, 35, Vansada, Navsari, Diwaliben Patel, 45, Chikhli, Navsari, Dhiru Halpati, 60, Palsana, Surat.
The leptospirosis bacteria is discharged in urine by rats and cattle and it enters the human body through wounds, eyes or mouth while working in waterlogged areas. Mostly farm labourers become victim of the disease as they have to work in waterlogged fields.
