SURAT: The inflow of water into Ukai dam at the rate of 1.30 lakh cusecs has both irrigation department and

Ukai dam authorities

worried. The

dam

has never experienced inflow of water at this rate during this period of the year i.e. between October and November. At present, the water is at its maximum level of 345 feet and the Ukai dam is full to its total capacity of 7,414 million cubic metres (MCM).

Sandip Mahakal, superintending engineer, Surat irrigation circle, said, “The inflow is very heavy because of rain in the upper catchment areas of Tapi River in the neighbouring states two days ago. The inflow will last for a day or two and gradually reduce because rain has stopped there.”

Any further increase in the rate of water inflow could be dangerous for the city, sources said, adding that this would mean release of water at the same rate from the dam, which could lead to flooding of low-lying areas in the downstream.

Meanwhile, Ukai dam authorities have been releasing water at the same rate and maintaining the

reservoir

level at 345 feet. They have also started hydropower plants.
