Goods elevator crashes, two workers die

Surat: Two workers died while another suffered injuries when a goods elevator crashed from the third floor of a dyeing and printing mill in Sachin GIDC area on Monday night. The workers were shifting textile bales for processing, when the elevator crashed. Dharmeshwar Behra and Sandip Chauhan died of severe injuries while Vikram Chauhan suffered injuries and is admitted in hospital. Police registered a case of accidental death in the incident that took place in Madhunandan Industries. The police will get the elevator inspected by the electrical department and forensic science laboratory, and based on the reports, will take further action. “It is not yet clear if the elevator was maintained properly or if there was any fault. It will also be investigated if they carry out required testing at regular intervals to check its stability,” said a police officer in Sachin GIDC police station. Police are also inquiring about the maximum weight capacity of the elevator while checking repair and maintenance records to find if the elevator needed any maintenance work, said the police.
