SURAT: A major fire broke out in a toy shop located at Soni Falia’s Pani Ni Bheet area in the walled city on Saturday morning. There were no casualties in the fire.
Surat Municipal Corporation’s (SMC) fire and emergency service sources said the fire broke out in the four-storey building of Natraj Games and Toys owned by Narendra Govindbhai. Toys worth lakhs of rupees along with computers, billing machine etc were gutted in the fire.
It took more than four hours for firefighters to control the fire. Though, the fire department is yet to ascertain cause of the fire, primary investigation revealed that it may have been sparked off by short-circuit in the power cables.
The fire caused panic in Pani Ni Bheet as there are many old houses made of wood in the vicinity. However, the fire department ensured that no other structure was affected.
A fire officer said, “The fire spread with lightning speed due to toys made out of plastic and fabric material. The second and third floors were godown for the toys.”
