SURAT: Women’s groups on Wednesday organized a rally demanding justice for Dhruti Patel, who had recently committed suicide in Navsari due to the alleged torture by her husband and in-laws. The protestors were also angry over delay by police in registering a complaint in the case and arresting the accused. At least 400 women and men, who carried banners, shouted slogans demanding justice for the victim.

The rally started from Dhruti’s parents’ house near Convent School and ended at the collectorate where the participants held a dharna.
Subsequent to the rally, police moved swiftly to arrest the accused on Wednesday evening. Divyesh, husband of Dhruti, Divyesh’s father Gordhan, mother Niru, brother Hiral and sister-in-law Ruti were arrested after the case was taken from Navsari town police inspector Bhargav Pandya and handed over to M R Chavda, police inspector, Jalalpor by police authorities.
A new complaint was registered in the case in which charges of abetment to suicide and murder under IPC sections were added. “We are collecting the details related to the case. Guilty will not be spared,” Chavda said.
Police are investigating allegations of Dhruti’s family that Divyesh had illicit relationship with another woman. Dhruti’s family also alleged that Divyesh used to torture Dhruti and his family members helped him in this. The victim’s family members alleged that the place where Dhruti hanged herself is not at a height from where one could commit suicide. They also alleged that Dhruti had severe injury marks on her hand and leg.
“The family had raised doubts about the injury marks. It has been found in the post mortem that the injury was post suicide and occurred while bringing the body down,” police said, adding that they are collecting call details of Divyesh.
